Ann Cleeves worked as a probation officer and a cook at a bird observatory before starting to write crime novels. She is a member of the "murder squad", working with other northern writers to promote crime fiction. In 2006 she was awarded the Duncan Lawrie Dagger Award for her novel Raven Black. Ann lives and works in North Tyneside.
