  • Ahmed Kathrada. b. 1929 Schweizer Reneke, South Africa. At 12, joined Young Communist League.One of accused in 1956 'Treason Trial'. Later jailed on Robben Island and in Pollsmoor. 'Letters from Robben Island: A Selection of Ahmed Kathrada's Prison Correspondence' (ed. Robert Vassen) contains 86 of the more than 900 pieces of correspondence he wrote during his 26 years imprisonment.Has been awarded four Honorary Doctorates, including the University of Missouri and Michigan State University.<br />
